UNWTO Reports Tourism Set to Return to Pre-Pandemic Levels in Some Regions in 2023

After stronger than expected recovery in 2022, this year could see international tourism arrivals return to pre-pandemic levels in Europe and the Middle East. Tourists are nonetheless expected to increasingly seek value for money and travel closer to home in response to the challenging economic climate.

International Tourism to Reach 65% of Pre-pandemic Levels by the End of 2022

An estimated 700 million tourists travelled internationally between January and September, more than double (+133%) the number recorded for the same period in 2021. This equates to 63% of 2019 levels and puts the sector on course to reach 65% of its pre-pandemic levels this year.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili told the Ministers’ Summit at the World Travel Market, 'the window of opportunity will not stay open forever. We need to rethink tourism: as a provider of jobs, an economic pillar, and, against the backdrop of COP27, as a solution to the climate emergency'.
