São Paulo’s June GOPPAR reached US$42.78, which was 145.4% of the pre-pandemic comparable. That level was down from May, however, when the market saw GOPPAR at US$50.01, which was 160% of the comparable 2019 level.

With an average expenditure of $2,177 per outbound tourist, Brazil was the seventh highest spending outbound market globally in 2021. This is forecasted to increase to $2,325 by 2025, to become the sixth highest behind Australia, the US, Iceland, Singapore and Mauritius.

Since Brazil started to emerge from COVID-19 isolation, domestic leisure demand has returned at a modest level while international and group demand are unlikely to return in the short-term restrictions remain in place. As noted in our previous analysis, preference for Latin America’s regional markets continues to be higher than urban markets. Brazil is no exception. Now the question is, when will corporate demand come back?
More open hotels, more demand - On 28 January, 96% of hotel rooms in Brazil were open. At the same time, the market has been exceeding 30% occupancy since the beginning of November, reaching occupancy levels as high as 37.8% on 9 December.
Leisure markets in Brazil have seen steady occupancy increases due to rising domestic demand. In October, Manaus posted a 51% occupancy level, followed closely Barra de Tijuca (46%) and Recife (44%).
